Dystopian Cyclopean
Original Mixed Media on Reclaimed Wood (approx. 12" round)
Dystopian Cyclopean
The ancient Greeks found elephant skulls and thought they had discovered giants with a single eye. They were not entirely wrong. "Dystopian Cyclopean" places a one-eyed skull with sweeping tusks at the center of a lush floral and fern arrangement, painted and burned on a reclaimed wood paddle that was once a broken basket. Pink chrysanthemums and deep green cedar sprays soften the bones just enough to make you linger.
The cyclops mythology was almost certainly born from encounters with fossilized proboscidean skulls, whose single large nasal cavity reads unmistakably as an eye socket. This piece lives at the intersection of that ancient misunderstanding and something genuinely beautiful.
This is an original hand-drawn, burned, and painted piece on a reclaimed thrifted wood form. The warm dark stain and visible wood grain are part of the composition.
